Your assignment is to seek out and gather Every Single Item in the category of your choice and bring it all into one room. So if we are decluttering toys, you would move all the toys hiding in the garage, the bathtub, the bedroom, the playroom and the closets, into one staging area.
Why? We start by experiencing the extent of our clutter, by literally standing in it, before we can feel comfortable releasing it. If an item is worth keeping in your home, it's worth touching during this process. Plus this is the most efficient way to go through everything in 4 hours and see real progress.
Regarding kids and their role: Your child cannot be home during the 4 hours of our decluttering date. The speed and complexity of the decluttering process are not age appropriateness. Prepare him by telling him you are having a tidying day while he is at school. You will be "making more space for playing with his favorite toys". If your child is a collector or has been through trauma, help him to feel a part of the process by asking him to select his 5 favorite play things and put them on a special card table you have set up inside the staging area. Those playthings will be "in-charge of the tidying" and will give us a vision to work towards.
